Keegan Harrison received the life-saving gift of a heart transplant on September 19, 2007. At only one week old and weighing less than 5lbs, he became the youngest and smallest heart transplant recipient in Texas and the smallest in the country. Keegan battles multiple critical medical conditions each day, including an immune disorder that has caused him to have multiple strokes, intestinal failure, renal failure, blood disorders, neurological trauma, dementia, neuropathy, and permanent progressive bone damage in his legs. His family and friends began racing under the informal team name of “Ks (i.e. kilometers) for Keegan” in order to spread awareness for organ donation when he was just a few years old. Over the years, friends and family competed under this team name in various events, including running races, triathlons, duathlons, cycling races, crossfit games, and more.
In 2017, Keegan joined Team Hoyt Texas, enabling him to experience the thrill of competition through the use of a specialized racing wheelchair. In 2019, Keegan and his mom began competing as a push-assist team in sprint and Olympic distance triathlons. In most events, Keegan carries Beads of Courage to share with other children on their medical journeys.
Ks For Keegan is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Texas. The mission of Ks For Keegan is to raise organ donation awareness and promote the health and wellness of solid organ transplant recipients and their families/caregivers through sport.
